How to Begin Decluttering Your Home

When you decide you want to declutter your whole home, the task may initially feel overwhelming. The best approach is to break the project up into sections to make it more manageable. If you have several days to dedicate to this task, you can complete it quickly, however, most people’s schedules don’t allow for this. Choose the most disorganized room to start this project and then begin decluttering your home with these 4 steps.

Step 1: Clearing Out

Stand in the middle of the space and decide which area is the messiest. For most people, this will be a closet. Remove everything from the area so that you have a clean slate.

Step 2: Cleaning

Now that the area is empty, clean it thoroughly. You rarely get the opportunity to completely clean spaces like closets because they are full of stuff. While nothing is inside, quickly wipe it down, clear out cobwebs, and vacuum or mop the floors.

Step 3: Decluttering Your Home by Sorting

Set aside a bag for trash, a box for donations, and another box for items that need to be fixed or are valuable enough to be sold. Consider each item as you sort through your belongings.

If something has not been used in the past year, chances are good that you don’t really need it. Once you have sorted through everything, take out the trash, put the box of donations in your car, list items to sell online, and put anything that needs to be fixed in your workshop.

Step 4: Organization

The rest of the project is a lot less overwhelming now that you have narrowed down what belongs in the space. Organize the remaining items by putting similar things together, and arrange them in the storage area in a way that makes sense. Keep items that you use daily towards the front and seasonal and less frequently used items towards the back.
